Abstract

Professor Viatcheslav Alexeev offers freelance journalist Sarah Powell his views of the state of the Russian national health system and the challenges faced as Russia moves from a socialist to a capitalist economy. Viatcheslav Alexeev is Professor of International Health and Management at the Department of International Health of the Russian Medical Academy of Advanced Medical Studies in Moscow. His wide‐ranging experience includes teaching management and health administration, health manpower development, and interpersonal relationships at the Central Institute for Advanced Medical Studies. Following this, for over 20 years he was Assistant Professor and Director of the WHO International Courses for Health Administrators. From 1981 to 1987, he worked on the staff of the Health Manpower Development Division of the WHO in Geneva, in which capacity he gained extensive experience of training, research and organization in over 30 countries.

Abstract

In this interview, Professor Andrew Hargadon talks to editor Sarah Powell about the concept of technology brokering as the key to innovation. Andrew Hargadon is Associate Professor of Technology Management at the Graduate School of Management, University of California, Davis and Director of the School's Technology Management Programs. An engineer by profession, prior to becoming an academic Andrew Hargadon worked as a product designer, initially for David Kelley Design (now IDEO Product Development) and then for Apple Computer. Subsequently, as a consultant in product design and development, he has worked with clients such as Briggs & Stratton, Hewlett‐Packard, Nike, Praxis Product Design and Vivecon.

In this issue of “Spotlight”, Michael Treacy speaks to editor Sarah Powell about the development and significance of offshoring. Dr Michael Treacy is co‐founder and chief strategist of GEN3 Partners, a science‐based R&D services company based in Boston, USA and St Petersburg, Russia that specializes in product innovation. Prior to GEN3, Dr Treacy founded and led several other companies including a strategy consulting firm that served leading corporations in telecommunications, industrial products, financial services, transportation, and retailing. Previously he was a professor of management at the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Michael Treacy has numerous published works to his name including the bestselling The Discipline of Market Leaders (co‐authored with Fred Wiersema) and Double Digit Growth: How Companies Achieve It – No Matter What. He is a frequent contributor to Harvard Business Review.
